Interactive Nature Exploration

Nature History Course

Brian is working with the City of Oshawa in delivering 3 weekly workshops followed by a nature hike for participants to use their knowledge gained through the workshops out in the field.

Workshops Include the following:

l. Your Friendly Raptors - Naturalist/Ornithologist Brian Joyce shares his personal up-close experiences with raptors. So who is considered a raptor? How do each of them hunt? One of them is the fastest animal on the planet! Do you know who? Come learn more about these fascinating fine feathered friends and how they are a big part of our ecosystem. (Thursday Sept 11th - 6:00 - 7:30pm)

2. Mammals - Creatures great and small - Let’s explore Ontario diverse group of mammals from land, sea and air! From our tiniest creature to the big guys both gentle and ferocious and even a few stinky ones! How are each important to our environment, what unique traits they each have and what signs to look for in the winter months. Brian will also share some entertaining encounters with a variety of these mammals throughout the workshop. (Thursday Sept 18th - 6:00 - 7:30pm)

3. Wildflowers and Trees - Ontario is home to many species of wildflowers and trees. Several different types of ecosystems contribute to the diversity of our plants. From Carolinian Forests, Frontenac Axis and Boreal forests you will learn techniques to identify trees and wildflowers and why they are not only important part of their habitat and the surrounding wildlife but their immense value to humans. (Thursday Sept 25th - 6:00 - 7:30pm)

4. Guided Nature Hike - Join Naturalist and Outdoor Educator Brian for a leisurely, engaging walk through Thickson's Woods. . Along the trail, Brian will bring the forest to life with stories and insights about raptors, mammals, wildflowers, and trees—all drawn from his knowledge of nature. Discover who’s soaring above, who’s hiding in the underbrush, and the vital role each plays in our local ecosystem. A perfect outing for nature lovers of all experience levels!

Natural History Presentations

Brian will bring his wide range of natural history knowledge to the classroom, group or public events. Brian has presented to naturalist groups, classrooms, Probus groups and public libraries all over Ontario. Brian brings his experiences, knowledge and humor, along with his bat buddy Bob, to the class as well. Learn about different species, their habitats, conservation efforts and what you can do to help our environment. These creative presentations unite naturalists and nature lovers alike while fostering a deep respect for the wildlife around us.

Topics Include (but not limited to): Birds, Bird Identification, Songbird Migration Monitoring, Raptors, Owls, Reptiles, Amphibians, Bats, Mammals, Fish, Insects, Wildflowers, Trees, Ecosystems in Ontario/Canada, Flora and Fauna symbiotic relationships....etc.
