Bird Identification and Migration Research
Billions of birds migrate each spring and fall to either wintering or breeding grounds. Brian will teach some techniques on how to identify the numerous bird species that visit this area during migration. We will explore the wonders of songbird and raptor migration and how/where they migrate and the challenges they face during their long journey. We will also learn about the migration monitoring research conducted by the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory and the efforts of the Canadian Migration Monitor Network in their research to monitor and protect species at risk. Come join me as we learn more about our fine feathered friends and some of my humorous experiences and stories when I have encountered some of these bird species.

Wildflowers
We will explore and identify local wildflowers and when they start to appear throughout the seasons. Learn about the benefits they provide to local wildlife, insects and ourselves and what invasive plants we want to avoid and remove to protect our ecosystems. We will also dive into some Indigenous teachings, by Porter Shimer, that speak to herbs and remedies that exist within these plants and how they can be used for our benefit.

Mammals - All Creatures Great and Small
Let’s explore Canada's and Ontario's diverse group of mammals from land, sea and air! From our tiniest creature to the big guys both gentle and ferocious (and even a few stinky ones!) How are each important to our environment, what unique traits they each have and what signs to look for in the winter months. Brian will also share some entertaining encounters with a variety of these mammals throughout the workshop.
Trees & Wildflowers
Lets learn how to identify some of the plants and trees along our walks in the fields and woods as well as some of the benefits they provide to animals and humans. We will also learn about evasive species that need to be managed to protect our existing habitats.

Amphibians & Reptiles
Who are these creatures that move in different ways? Herpetology is the study of amphibians and reptiles. Huge contributors to the health of our ecosystems and are indicators on the health of our environment? Come and learn more about how they move and hunt. Where do they live and how can you find them? Also how to avoid getting “skunked” and bitten by these cold-blooded creatures.
Batty about Bats
Learn the truth about our bats and how they are a crucial part of our ecosystems. We will look at all 9 species found in Ontario as well as some very unique ones found abroad. We will explore myths and explain the reason why you would rather have them around.
Raptors
We are not talking about dinosaurs or basketball but predators of the sky! So, who is a raptor? How do each of them hunt? One of them is the fastest animal on the planet! Do you know who? Come learn more about these fascinating fine feathered friends and how they play a part in our ecosystem.

Symbiotic Relationships
Symbiosis is an important interaction that exists between plants and animals. Sometimes its good and other times bad. I will uncover the various relationships that can be found all around us and how we can help our environment by being aware of those organisms who can damage our ecosystems.
Hibernation
Do you know who the true hibernators are? Who just takes a nap and wakes up when they’re hungry? Let’s take a look at the various animals who hibernate or go into torpor, how they prepare and what habitats they prefer when winter comes.
